Underlay affects comfort, warmth, sound reduction and carpet lifespan. A better underlay can make a mid-range carpet feel premium and help it last longer — especially on stairs and in high-traffic areas.

A durable twist or nylon/polyamide option with a supportive underlay is usually best.
They can show marks more, but modern stain-resistant fibres + good matting make a big difference.
